The reduction mammoplasty is a procedure that is done to give solution to a number of problems, rather than for purely aesthetic reasons. The very large breasts can cause various problems, begining from spots in the soulders by the straps of the corset, back and neck pain, skin irritation to most difficult situations such as breathing problems and kyfosis.
In breast reduction surgery we remove part of the gland mass, fat and skin, making breasts smaller and lighter. The nipple is moved to its new position. It may also reduce the size of areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple) when it is too large.
In most cases, surgery is not performed until the fully developed breasts of a woman. However, it can be done earlier if they cause serious medical problems. The surgery is not recommended for women who intend to breastfeed in the immediate future and it is postponed for 1 year after the end of lactation.
Techniques for breast reduction vary. The incisions are made around the areola and extended to some extent to the inframammary fold. It is important that patients understand that the scars of the incisions will mature and will fade out with time, but will be permanently visible.
The patient immediately after surgery has a «tubes» (supply) in each breast, which is usually removed in 48 hours.
For about a month the patient wears a special corset.
